This video demonstrates six things that we did wrong the first time we tried intraosseous infusion on a severely dehydrated, critically ill but awake adult. We learned that being comfortable with the use of IO needles in the ACLS or PALS resuscitation setting does not necessarily crossover into the use of intraosseous needles in the awake adult.

  • I hear the Philips HIGH PRIORITY ALARM THERE. WHAT IS GOING ON?? That ding every second is something BAD like major DESAt, asystole, V-Fib, V-Tach, APNEA, etc.

  • @ventilator98 The patient was severely anemic, dehydrated, and possibly septic. She remained "stable" through out her stay in the ED although her BP was in the 80 and 90s for a while and she may not have been tracking on the pulse oximeter very well. She was very sick and a difficult line access. The reason for doing the IO on this awake patient was to get some initial access until we could get something more definitive.

  • We learn from our mistakes, or others. This is a great video, there are many IO videos on the web but for the most part they demonstrate how to landmark and drill and little more. Nice to see some common errors exposed.

  • you drew that much marrow and thought you misplaced it?

  • Good video.

  • Thank you for this video, very helpful and humble of you to post!

  • @ventilator98 You are not entirely correct. The phillips monitors will beep at the designated parameters. For example, if you set the SpO2 parameters to be 92%+ and the pt hits 91%, it will start beeping. Likewise, if for some reason the O2 monitor is not placed correctly and it gets an erroneous reading of 80s, it will beep and continue beeping until you hit silence/stop alarms.

  • Thanks for the video. We are just starting to use these in my ICU and I can only assume this will help me to avoid the same mistakes that you made.

  • Oh my word! I feel so bad for that lady. Thank you for posting this video to show other what not to do.

  • Talk about some stupid SOB's!!! Now, I wish they'd do the same to those retards and see how they liked it!! Man, they need to be beaten or fired!

  • @lmellick OK, thank you. I know all about the IO procedure, and I mainly was just curious, because if I'm not mistaking, thats an MP series monitor from Philips intellivue series.

I have the ability to tell people the exact brand monitors because I have perfect pitch, and know the sounds and beeps BY HEART.
