Set in the sleepy hollows of New York's Hudson River Valley at the turn of the century, this is a classic horror tale. A grizzly old sailor visits an ex-shipmate, Samuel White, and his family. He leaves behind a mystical monkey's paw said to grant the bearer three wishes. But he warns strongly against its use: "Fate rules people's lives, and those who defy it do so to their woe!" However, the Whites can't resist making one humble wish. Indeed, it comes true - but in a fatal way. The family then tries to use the paw's final wishes to reverse the tragedy, but again their fulfilled wishes bring only sorrow. Based on the story by W. W. Jacobs. Produced by Stillife-Gryphon Films. A Coronet release. 27 minutes, color.

  • i have to make this story into a movie for english, :(

  • I believe this was made in 1974, or possibly 1978.

  • great story. I vividly remember reading short stories like this, "To Build a Fire", and "Harrison Bergeron" in middle school as a kid. Chilling ending to this one. Loved it.

  • I remember in 8th grade reading this story... we later had a memorization assignment and I chose The Monkey's Paw as my piece. The assignment was to do 300 words (every extra 100 = 30 extra credit points). I did a total of 2796 words and managed a 171 percent for the quarter grade. It was a magical day when I recited it- one of the best of my life.

  • This story is pretty much the lesson of "be careful what you wish for".

Of course those who wish for nothing better never GET anything better so who knows what we're supposed to get from this.

  • mr. white took out the paw from the fire not herbert..... i think it is a bit different version

  • ok studied this in GCSE english .. wasnt scary at all good short story but hardly terrifying
