In 2004 massive get-out-the-vote efforts created a huge turnout on Election Day, bringing more voters to the polls than ever before. But in key states (and The Keystone state), many voters showed up at the polls and waited in long lines for hours only to later discover the voting machines showed many of them had no vote recorded for any presidential candidate.
This particular scary canary in a coalmine is known as presidential "undervotes" ballots cast without recording a choice for the highest office in the land.
This clip from UNCOUNTED focuses on instances of undervoting in two battleground states in 2004 New Mexico and Pennsylvania. New Mexico had a particularly large problem, where presidential undervote rates of 25% were reported in Democratic-leaning Hispanic and American Indian precincts. New Mexico had the nations highest presidential undervote rate 21,084. (George W. Bush won that state by less than 6,000 votes.)
2008 might have a lot things in common with 2004. Now we'll know what to do if undervotes is one of them.
IN OREGON:
NO LINES, NO BROKEN MACHINES, NO TIME OFF WORK, NO VOTER INTIMIDATION, NO VOTE FLIPPING, NO DEALING W/ BAD WEATHER, NO REPUBLICANS CHALLENGING YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE, NO INSUFFICIENT IDs, NO "HANGING CHADS", NO CONFUSION ON HOW TO USE A BALLOT, NO PRECINCT CONFUSION...
WHY? OUR BALLOTS ARE MAILED WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME AND WE STUDY THE ISSUES AND IDIOTS AT OUR LEISURE WHILE FILLING OUT THE BALLOT, THEN JUST SEND IT IN B4 THE 4TH. NO MUSS! NO FUSS!
THEN WE WATCH TV AND WONDER- WHAT THE_____?!

I am horrified by this video and the film "UNCOUNTED" which is running right now on STARZ. Everyone should view this film. We should all take ACTION to make sure each and every vote is counted. I am voting Democratic, but I'll accept my candidate's loss if his loss is FAIR. I sat back and steamed over the losses to G.H.W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, but I will be damned if I'll keep my mouth shut anymore.

This is very scary. If McCain wins, we know it is due to undervoting. Our voting system is severly flawed. It's a shame that we didn't learn from the last 2 presidential elections.
