PENGUINmama88: speaking 'gobsmacked'... your mention of The Lighthouse... yes, a long ong ong ong time ago. You must remember then "The Jazz KNOB?" There was that FM station and one other pure, jazz-dedicated station. The KNOB. Where I first heard the greats at such tender age (my high school tender age[s])... "This is Mose...here at the KNOB. That's the Jazz KNOB. K-N-O-B, Long Beach." Mose... man oh man....

Just saw Mose live tonight, I loved this version and thought it was the highlight of the show.

"It just doesn't work" ???
Maybe yowzephyr should have said: "It just doesn't work for me".
I played drums with Mose for 20 plus years and the thousands of folks who came to hear him thought this "experiment" worked quite well. But, of course, everyone has a different response to music, it's just that this response seems a bit drizzly.

If you listen to the complete lyrics you will soon discover that this song is not a "sunny" song at all. The lyrics describe the singer's sorrow when his love leaves him.

I had the honor of interviewing Mose for the British magazine "Keyboard Player" and for anyone who is interested to read it you can find it in this month's( October 2010)
edition. He is a class act and a true living legend!

@stones99throw I was lucky enough to see Mose twice, once at Clearwater Jazz Holiday, he came on last and he was SO great, by then most people had left we got lucky as he was definately the hit of the festival that year!! Another time, we saw him at a jazz club in Tierre Verde (sp) and he was wonderful, during his break, he came over and had a drink with us!!!! love him, hes a huge talent. I sure wish I could see him one more time.

yowzephyr - this is exactly how this song should be sung! listen to the words, it's not a happy song - his love has gone or is threatening to go and he' s crying ...great, great rendition. I'm 63 and have only just discovered this voice and captivating piano playing.
drizzly, my my has yowzephr even bothered to search what this great blues man has done, or just a listen to me?

This is my favourite man, singing my favourite version of this song. I first heard him a loooong time ago at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. When he started to play this, I literally was gobsmacked. I have heard it a thousand times since then (live woot!). Thanks so much for posting it :)
