Before the days of Broadcast Architecture and the musical category of "Smooth Jazz", a number of players in the NW corner of the world were putting their spin on the more contemporary forms of Jazz music during the late 70's and into the 80's.

Keyboard/Vocalist Tom Grant, along with Jeff Lorber and Eugene, OR native Dan Siegel were the among the vanguard of this new spin on the music.

This particular clip is from the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz in Gresham, OR.
and features the '83 Tom Grant Band in concert doing a pretty song called "Candy".

One of the hallmarks of Tom's bands was the ability to stretch out on the tunes and to still have shape and "something to say", blowing-wise (soloing).

Tom is joined here by Dan Balmer on guitar, Brad Herrett on acoustic bass and Carlton Jackson on drums who incidentally, had a 13 year career with Tom and has appeared on 6 of his albums during the 80s and 90s.
