Four Chinese-made Lasko-brand box fans purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond.com, bound in compass formation. The work is suspended by nylon rope and it's power conduit, an extension cord.

When activated, the fan blades draw air in, and through each other causing the work to spin. The resulting circular wind pattern generates no wind, but charges the rope and extension cord with kinetic energy due to increasing tension. This tension eventually becomes too great for the fans to overcome and the work reaches stasis, at which point a repeat cycle timer cuts the power and the work spins backwards until all the rope & cord energy is released. The timer restarts the process a few minutes later.

Due to the stress upon the extension cord, the cord degrades and fails during the course of day and must be replaced.

This work and its materials were procured, assembled, exhibited, documented, disassembled and returned during October 2008.

  • Were these the weather shield box fans?

  • My cat drew a schematic of that with his paw 5 yesrs ago

  • Get me a baseball bat and I'll make that into art...

  • Well, ok then.

  • yeh rite

  • One of the fans stopped spinning very early. It needs oiling already!

  • if you want it to keep spinning all you need is a commutator like device like from a vacuum cleaner with retractable cord hack one of those open and take out the commutor block and brush block and use that to keep the fans spinning with no cord breaking, and I have 2 fans like this when they fail im gonna get hacking

  • This person was way too much time on their hands.
