The square was designed by none other than Michelangelo Buonarroti, the famous Italian painter, sculptor, engineer and poet, who most of us now know simply as Michelangelo. The square was not completed in Michelangelo's time (1475-1564) but in the 17th century. The square faces, not towards the Roman Forum (the most ancient part of Rome) but, towards St. Peter's Basilica, and has an impressive staircase leading down, which is called the Cordonata.
