Here I accompany Duo Los Compadres (featuring Compay Segundo) in showing how to play el bongo to a son montuno tune Santiago de Cuba style.
The son montuno song form originated in the hills above Santiago de Cuba in the 19th century and was based on the rhythm of horse hooves.
Later it descended down to the city of Santiago where it was urbanized and became known as son, which then spread like a wave through the rest of Cuba.

  • @cartuliano2000

sabes que en cuba, oriente especialmente, es mejor por que tienes piel de chivo y vaca mas fina en el mundo por sonido tan bueno. entonces la problema es como construirlos. es mejor caminar en los barrios con este pregunta y va estar allegro pronto. Saludos

  • That's very entertaining, You are gifted I just uploaded Patato and Mangual Son Montuno, Understanding Latin Rhythms. That's how I found you. *****

  • Tiene ritmo, pero esta fuera de tono.

  • Very nice matt, to bad I'm not in the bay area anymore. Wouldn't mind getting together with ya. I been playing congas for 37 years and still have the same congas I started with. There the king kongas made in the bay area, which they don't make anymore. I had them painted my colors and all. What I like about my congas is the head, there about twice as thick as lp and they look sweet. Take care bro ;O) IMO, bongos are not hard to play once you learn the basics.

  • Mr. Mdubuque you have made a amazing portrayal of the original son montuno from rural Oriente in Cuba. Your pattern, techniques and rhythm show the exact style of this tradition and it makes it even better to have Los Compadres in the background since they were one the faithful representatives of Son Oriental which is the original foundation for all other forms of son that evolved later. I wonder if it is Pedro Mena the bongocero playing in the rocordings you use here
