Colour slides (scanned at 900dpi) taken of the location filming of rail scenes for the 1972 Columbia Pictures/Open Road production of "Young Winston". The GWR loco 1466 was disguised to represent an armoured loco of the Boer War. Weather was sometimes wet but camera techniques dealt with that problem. The whole experience was enjoyable- even did a firing turn on the final day's run up to Penwyllt. The movie was produced by Carl Foreman (who generously treated us all to food and drink in the Price's Arms on completion) and directed by Richard Attenborough. Suggest buying the DVD (Sony Home Entertainment) to see the results of everyone's efforts. Latest information- went to the Price's Arms a week ago, hoping to get some food and drink- it was closed down!!

  • My father in law was one of the Volunteer members who helped out with 1466 we've got a great photo of him with two other members and Edward Woodward & Simon Ward..also have a Call sheet of the days filming and a letter to him from GWS thanking him for his help.

  • @thornsworn You did not mention your father-in-law's name, but I probably knew him- did he appear in any of these photos? Thanks for watching. Mervyn.

p.s. your comment appeared twice in my inbox- I have had the same problem with some of my comments to other contributors.

  • An interesting collection of slides. 1466 looks so much better with the armour plate removed.

  • 1466 needed a LOT of cleaning to remove the grime and soot from the pyrotechnics, after the armour plating was removed but it certainly did look better afterwards. Thanks for watching.

  • I remember visiting the set as a boy. How I too wish there had been camcorders then.

  • I went back there a few months ago and I regret that the area looked a bit run down, but at least I have happy memories of it in 1972. Thanks for watching.

  • Glad you liked it. Only wish I had a camcorder 30 years ago.

  • Thanks for comment. It was dirty, tiring and greasy but it was fun!

  • That brings back some happy memories, I was working at the Divisional Office at Cardiff at the time, and I photographed 1466 passing through Cardiff Central behind a Hymek en route to Colbren Jnc. I also saw some of the action you've captured so well but didn't take any photos at the time. Thanks very much 5* Bob
