Indian Sikhs Riot Over Austria Killing

Violence in India's Punjab, as rival groups of Sikhs clash over an attack that happened a continent away.




Shops, cars and trains were torched as thousands took to the streets in protest after a Sikh preacher was killed in a temple in Austria.




The rioters were members of the Dalit community, also known as "untouchables", furious over an attack they say was directed against them.




[Lalit Kumar, General Secretary of Regional Bhahujan Samaj Party]:
"People are angry, as the attack is not just on the preacher but on the whole community, the population of which runs into millions. Holy men never have enmity with anyone and this attack is a part of a conspiracy."




Sant Rama Nand was shot dead after giving a sermon to hundreds of Sikhs in Vienna.




At least nine others were also wounded in the attack by fellow Sikhs armed with guns and knives.




Witnesses said the preacher had gone ahead with the service despite threats of violence from a rival shrine.




Members of the congregation said the attackers had been extremists from a higher caste.




Indian police clamped down with curfews in towns and cities across Punjab -- forcing an uneasy peace after a night of violence.
