The paintings shown here are investigations into the historical notions of landscape. The works focus on how the countryside evolves and is marked by human action through time. They are also a personal account of layered memories, feelings and the familiarity that comes from walking through and experiencing landscapes.
It is through repeated visits to areas of special interest and then making artworks about them that I become more fascinated and inspired by their beauty. Whilst walking, thinking and talking the memories, thoughts, feelings and emotions can become locked into and associated with the places visited. I often use photographs in the initial stages of making artworks but aim to capture much more in order to really take ownership of the places I visit.
The act of making a mark or recording a moment in time is a strong and natural impulse in humans and I have tried to show this by layering ideas from nature and graffiti art.
The rich, organic colour scheme, textural grounds and patterns seek to evoke an optimistic, dreamlike quality to the images. These emphasize the idea that a narrative can be found within the landscapes.
I use mixed media to create my artworks including acrylic and spray paints. The works are not usually planned in advance and tend to take shape as they progress giving an intuitive, layered feeling and finish to the compositions.
Beautiful... Can you tell me the title (and artist, too) of the song, please? Thank you!
