this is a great way for her to learn her numbers. in her mind she thinks "if i get the right amount, that is the amount of m&ms i get" so she understands and finds out how to do it. god bless little abby!

That's how my son acts if eats chocolate(he has autism)-or anything with sugar in it. It makes him go crazy and he can't sit still. Good job on using the dynavox!!

What a wonderful resource. Thank you for posting this video. Does Abby have any portability challenges with her device in the community? Also do you have access to any BCBA's that have designed communication & language learning programs using an Augmentative Communication Device?

the humanity is in giving speech to those who cannot physically talk. imagine how frustrating and depressing your life would be if you couldn't communicate your needs and desires to other people! many people with developmental disorders lack the motor skills/planning necessary for sign language, and even then, in order to talk, you need to be talking to someone who can also sign or have an interpreter.

This makes me wonder if there was a way to get "I want four M&Ms" or "I want one M&M" as a sentence target to get the idea of asking for the larger quantity.
Just my $ .02, but then two is a little different than one & four.
This girl is pretty sweet. I like how she wants to finish the puzzle & it shows how the whole table is offering her a variety of stimulus that is ruining the training on which is better to ask for.
This girl loves puzzles, but the learning of communication is key.

Hehe, that was cute... Oh no you don't and Yeel-Haw!!!! :) Go Abbey! Awesome therapist.
Hugs,
Kris
Possibly its not counter productive , she does use it to ask for things.
I just find it difficult to watch because I do not believe she knew what you wanted from her , and someone with autism additionally would find it confusing. Hopefully there is a new device soon to make children learn without constantly using the board.
I am not trying to be nagative , just want to understand where the device can be improved.

Thank you, yes, I understand your point. It is a tremendously sad feeling for a parent to watch their child with autism struggle, almost overwhelming at times and we're just trying to do the best we can to help her. I am learning how to do Floortime therapy right now and have already started trying to do it with her and it has been a bright light of hope, it makes her happy and me happy! Thanks again for your input.

Like where is the humanity in this.
Honestly please respond. I know this is the best you can do but please understand how counter productive you are being in this situation , with chocolate, and the what more.
The computer talking also!! So confusing , imagine being young and autistic in this situation. There is going to be a new device soon , much better then these. For now , this is all we got.

She needs to learn quantity to function in this world, this has been the best way we have found to teach her. I am not sure why you believe it is counterproductive? Also, her Dynavox has enabled her to tell us what she wants instead of pitching hour long fits, made her world and ours so much better...not sure what is confusing about it, she has found what she wants to ask for on it and uses it all day for those things, without any prompting at all. You aren't getting the whole picture here.
