@jstragne I was working in a record shop when this came out, and unfortunately it was not a successful album for him. Shame, I really liked it. If you believe everything you read on wiki (and I do, religously... :p) then he was quite in awe of Pino Palladino on bass, and mixed the bass up to the front - credit where it's due. And maybe Gary was a little ahead of his time... Pino's sound came much more to the fore a couple years later on Paul Young's No Parlez album.

Sounds very much like Japan w a touch of Duran Duran from the early 80's, doncha think? Specially the bassline and the "string/horn" section... Well, I guess he needed to update his sound to get into the game and top-10 lists, and also to make it in the states... I have always loved him though I prefer his darker works...
