I like that they have the bad taste to repeatedly allude to 9/11. It was an artistic act in the first place, and art SHOULD offend people. And sometimes it should contaminate public waterways with carcinogens.

There are also a lot of other things in the movie. And like them, the plane is completely irrelevant to the plot. The trailer puts so much emphasis on how they're committing a huge crime and how they're going to die and stuff that the only reason to include the plane was to grab people's attention by reminding them of Sept. 11th. It's stupid.

All of you asking 'Why did he put his life at risk?' are demonstration a lazy, non-adventurous society, based upon reason. He had no reason, and that was the beauty of it. There was no why. He was a free man, a rare thing now, as we are all bound by work, money, love. He could do what he wanted, and that has a sheer awesomeness about it.
