actually if you check the climate map south of Vero Beach is classified as tropical climate north is sub tropic. don't forget Miami has an average of 75 in January. the freeze weather was a fluke

@JaneCarraro But weren't there ocean effect flurries and below-freezing nighttime lows as far south as Jamaica??

We made snowmen on the Union North Lawn at the University of Florida and students in the residence halls tied up long distance lines for hours phoning home to tell the news. I first noticed a snowflake outside my window at Beaty Towers East (Room 1104) the night before the blast. Now I live in Michigan where we're getting hit today!

@JaneCarraro Miami is tropical monsoon climate so in essence its tropical climate but with more humid weather. Plus this snowday happened only once in recorded history which means that YES people were surprised btw Miami is a few miles from Cuba

@dramaking33 Even Northern Florida, for the most part stays warm in the winter. But yes anywhere can experience cold snaps. Some places just more then others.

@mcduffiesteven I heard it snowed in Miami back in '71 and a footage is on YouTube seeing University of Miami students playing snowball.

It's rarely ever cold in southern Florida. It seems unlikely for it to snow in southern Florida. It's usually in the 70s. I've never been to southern florida in the winter, but i heard it's usually nice for the most part in the winter.
I remember this. I was 11 and living in Kissimmee. If I recall correctly, the last time it snowed in FL (prior to 1977) was the 1898 winter.
