@shelherman but lucy liu is from taiwan so she is taiwanese. many people are ethnically chinese in taiwan, indonesia, thailand, phillipines, malaysia etc

Putonghua and Mandarin are the same thing. Taiwanese (or Minnanhua) is basically the same dialect as the one in Fujian province but the official language of Taiwan is Guoyu, which is another way of saying putonghua or Mandarin. The Taiwanese speak it with an accent but it's still Mandarin!
