2009 (Tom Baxter wrote this song for veteran songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, which she recorded and released on her 2009 CD. This clip is a live version performed on her Concert TV Special)

This song, Almost There, is a track from Dame Shirley Bassey's 2009 CD titled, 'The Performance'

LYRICS:
If you're listening now
I hope that I make more sense
'Cause now I'm not quite so young
I'm not quite so foolish in my defense

Pictures that I hid in my room
They now come out
And those places we used to go
I talk about

And now I'm not the girl of your dreams
Well, I took you almost there
I'll be damned if I care
Now if I'm not girl, we were almost there

Looks like I've lost you somewhere
And now I'm not the girl in your life

Well okay, maybe it hurts
And maybe I still feel my lips brush your face
What the hell, I'm not fool enough
To claim that I'm over you as yet

No, oh no
And though I've still got some way to go
Well, lately I'm almost there
I'll be damned if I care
Now that I'm not your girl, we were almost there

Watch me someday
Yeah, somehow I will make it somewhere
Going higher, I'll rise so much higher
And I'll hold my head higher

Almost there, that perfume that you wear
Now that I'm not your girl, we were almost there
Almost there!

  • I love this. They're a perfect musical match.

  • She sings every song as her own...makes you want to cry....what a voice...thanks DSB

  • unbelievable!!

  • In her 70's and still outperforming every other singer in every category. She sings the stories of all of us who have struggled, fallen, gotten up nd persevered even when the odds were stacked against us. Not just a performer, singer, she empowers the world through her great work. Thank you DSB.

  • Once again... splendid.

  • What can you say that could describe a performance like this at any age,let alone "The Dame".She is so incredable

  • It's a beautiful song, I agree Tom sings it too slow...Bassey knocks it out of the ball park as only she can....sends shivers down your spine.

  • @janinecapaldi His version is really nice too, soft and sweet. What a gorgeous song, lyrically and musically. I read somewhere that he actually wrote this song for a voice like Shirley Bassey. He gave her this soft bittersweet song, and she really tells the story with her vocal ability. I am in such awe of Dame Shirley's voice at age 73 that I am in biased. I like hers best, but the tenderness s you described is nice too.

  • As great as Shirley Bassey is, no-one sings this song better than Tom himself. It's beautiful and clearly written from the heart and he sings every note with an achiing tenderness.
