Pushing in labor must be learned during pregnancy. You cannot learn a new skill when you are in pain.
To push effectively you must do three things:
1. Strengthen your abdominal muscles with the Tupler Technique exercises
so the muscles will be strong enough to push for as long as they need to push without the muscles going to failure.
2. Practice pushing while having a bowel movement so it becomes second nature in labor. The goal being to push with the strengthened abdominals and relax the pelvic floor that has been strengthened and stretched during pregnancy.
3. Hold a splint while pushing in labor to keep the uterus in proper alignment.
