View a brief animation that describes the difference between a total heart transplant and a standard heart transplant.
A typical heart transplant is performed by removing only half of the diseased heart. The new heart is then connected to the remaining portions of the diseased heart. We perform a total heart transplant, which involves removing all the diseased heart and connecting the new heart using six connections as opposed to only four connections with the standard transplant. With the total transplant technique, since all the diseased heart is removed, there is more natural heart performance and improved exercise capacity.
