Hovis was the first Navy nurse to volunteer to go to Vietnam in 1963. Her mission was to build a hospital in Saigon. She describes in detail what it was like when the coup d'etat started on the streets as the city around her was being bombarded by shells and small-arms fire. The tension rises as Hovis observes tanks and troops out on the streets, as she relates that "we didn't know the identity of those troops on the street -- were they friend or foe?" Hovis narrowly escapes injury as a bullet smashes into the balcony she was on just a mere three inches from her chest.

I read your book, Station Hospital Vietnam - A navy Nurse in Vietnam 1963-1964. I am a VN Era Vet,didn't serve in VN but many friends did. I am taking a college course on VN to better understanding the War. Your book brings the subject alive with everday experiences. I've read a dozen books and yours is the best.
Your speech at the 25th Aniversery of the Vietnam War Memorial was great, especially the part about finally being welcomed home. Thanks for your years of service.
