The Making the Links program, offered by the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan since 2005, is a unique service learning opportunity for health sciences students. Selected undergraduate medical students experience community health and development in the contexts of rural and remote health in a northern Saskatchewan Indigenous community, an urban underserved community at SWITCH (the Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health) in Saskatoon, and in the global south in Mozambique. Through Making the Links students gain an understanding of the diverse factors that contribute to health or to illness and partner with communities in this education. This video highlights a powerful program with themes of community-based participatory research, service-learning, Indigenous health, interdisciplinary training and more. These complex themes are brought to you just as they are to the student, through the stories and voices of real people who live in these communities and who know the reality. Making the Links is a first step to becoming a socially accountable physician.
