The Pratt/Whitney and the Rolls-Royce engines are TURBO-FAN designs, meaning that a relatively small core jet turbine is turning a 7-foot (2-m) shrouded fan. The turbine blade core in the photograph (minus the blades) fits the dimensions of such an engine. The next time you go to the airport, try sighting down inside a modern turbofan engine, as in any Airbus or late-model Boeing product. You will see it's mostly hollow inside. Big fan/small engine.
