Stan Rogers died just like the Skipper in this song. He was on a plane that caught on fire and smoke and fire choking the cabin. Rogers had a chance to escape but insisted on staying on the plane to help passengers out. He died from smoke inhalation, a larger-than-life hero who gave up his life so strangers could live. Hats off to you Stan Rogers!

Like many, I didn't discover my love for Stan's music until he was already gone, though his music truly does live on in it's own right, as well as with his Brother, Garnet, and his son Nathan, both also brilliant musicians, who have the power that runs in the Rogers' blood, with flavors and styles all their own. Garnet is more a man of the mountains, and the road than the sea, and Nathan sings traditional Inuit music. Both are available here on YouTube- look 'em up!

He actually grew up in Hamilton, Ontario although he spent most of his summers in the Canadian Maritimes with relatives.

Heh, I was born in Bermuda and lived there 16 years. Spent a lot of time on and in the water. It's a shame I didn't discover Stan's music before I left. It's funny to hear him sing of North Rock and the reefs that I've seen and know.
Such a shame he died so young.

I did not realize how much I love Stan Rogers so much until one by one I found that he was the common denominator of some of the most moving sea and folk songs I had gathered!

I love Stan so much. My life would be incomplete with out him!!
HE was 33.

Such a vivid story... They just don't make this kinda quality music anymore
Thank you so much for posting this.
The Captain in this song is a hero as is the writer of this song.
Thank you again.

The Captain is an old-fashioned leader, willing to sacrifice himself if necessary so the people in his charge can live. Pretty stark contrast to the sort of "leaders" we have these days, where it's the other way around - they're willing to sacrifice as many of us as necessary to ensure their own survival.
