so many people arguing about it. "it's fake" or "it's real." the fact is, one person can go in and experience something they can't explain, and another can go in and absolutely nothing will happen. the most common thing about the place from believers and non-believers is the misfortunes that befall you if you take something from the cave. my family on my father's side is from that area, and they all say to avoid it, and if you go, to leave everything alone.

@cookieman38111 I guess he watched the movie. ; ) I would be interested to hear it though. I have read that there is a clearing in the woods near the cave's opening that is creepy. No birds, sounds, etc. and you can "feel" something. What some people fail to realize is that there have been "hauntings" or evil spirits that even the Native Americans recognized, especially ones in certain woods which I think may account for some of the weirdness that some folks experience. Adams is interesting.

@thebeatonpath Thanks. The only info I have on it is the Art Bell show where a baptist minister claimed he had figured it out.

I have a cousin who went to the cave before it was open to the public back in the '70s (asked permission of the owners who did not commercialize it) and some spooky stuff happened. I was just a kid, but I remember her talking about it and them finding a pick axe.

@cookieman38111 Sadly that information is all from the horribly made movie with Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland called "The American Haunting" which was not based on fact. Having grown up in the area, I've heard and read all about the Bell Witch haunting and visited Adams from time to time. None of the family was treated well and Andrew Jackson was even a witness of the activity. Everything I have read said John Bell was poisoned by the "Witch" when his medicine was mixed up.

@amvfan82 thank you. I'd never heard that before.

@cookieman38111 I heard that the slave of the bell family was the one that placed the curse upon the family because they did something to her. I was born in TN and thats what they always told me ever since i was a kid

John Bell, the father, is the only person in the U.S. with a death certificate that says death by paranormal complications.

@36Steff and furthermore, your honor! John and Benjamin Batts had a dispute over a slave, not land. Catie (back in those days it was spelled with a C, not a K) was not involved in any argument nor had hatred for John Bell, Sr. that is well documented if you actually READ the old journals and missives. the 'Bell Witch' was more of a poltergeist than someone working bad mojo on another person, if you believe in it.
And now is the part where you say "all of it's wrong! i know the truth!"
The story is that the father abused one of the daughters and the spirit harassed him until he died. The other daughter was pampered by the spirit and the mother was treated well and not so well at times. She suppossedly knew what happened and did nothing, so the spirit harassed her from time to time. The father eventually died from the stress of the continual harassment.

@cookieman38111 That's interesting - never heard that part of it. But a lot of times "hauntings" can be linked to abuse within a home - not saying it is common but it has been a common denominator in some cases. Thanks for the info.
