The audience does not know what is coming up; he thought it was kind of silly at first too by the way, just listen to 4:30.

But it *was* blackmail, no matter what you think about the blackmailee's transgressions. And on the side of the blackmailer there was no moral outrage involved -- just a desire to cash in.

So it was a power play on both sides.

Yeah, but comics can't really help it if bizarre and creepy stories they tell sound funny even if they're serious. I still recall when Michael Richards, "Seinfeld's" Kramer, apologized on Leno's show for his outburst on stage, and even that looked like something leading up to a punchline, making people chuckle.

These guys make a living out of being freakish and self-deprecating, and if something serious happens that falls into that pattern it's hard not to be amused by that as well.
