Using a veil for a portion or for an entire choreography of belly dance is a beautiful and exciting prop that can help you interpret the music to an audience. Learning how to move the veil so it appears to have a life of its' own can be a challenge, as well as finding clever ways to conceal your costume and allow you to frame your movements without ending up in a tangled mess!

I show you some veil basics gathered over the past nine years of dance. Although I can't give away secrets gleaned from top choreographers, I can share some basic moves that you've probably already seen before, and give you the technique behind each move.

It's always best to study with a professional teacher, but that's not always possible. You're welcome to use any of my belly dance "how-to" videos to help you work on elements of the dance, and I hope you pass them on to your friends in dance.

  • Thank you so much for the crossing the hands technique as you go overhead. I always seem to get caught with that one!

  • @NightsMuse Glad that was helpful for you.

  • @Xiaorene89 My veils are typically 3.5 yards, which converts to about 3.2 meters. You need enough material at either end, so when you hold it with your back at the middle, arms outstretched holding either side, you have enough material to move.

For large stage presentations, I have used a 4 yard veil (3.7 meters). You must move the veil faster and often wider to make sure you do not get tangled in it. For 4 yard veil technique, try looking at the work of Shoshana of Arcata, CA.

  • Good stuff Imei.

Very well said and very easy to understand.

  • @erichereatthetube Thanks!

  • I just noticed I left a repeated sentence in my edit! Sorry folks. It is what it is. :)
