A few notes on strategies that might seem counterintuitive:

In the second loop, most enemies release one or two bullets upon death. It's very dangerous to shoot everything in sight and I need to heavily ration my bombs if I want to make it to the end, so I often hold my fire.

Bombing grants a brief window of invincibility, which is why you see me fly through bullets at 1:36 and other moments.

The intentional death at the start of 2-5 causes the lanterns to fire single shots instead of faster three-way spreads. It also replenishes my bomb stock, allowing me to cleanly take out both pairs of cannon robots before the first giant hand appears. This is important: if a robot is loitering when the hand spawns, I need to bomb to survive. The hand would probably die as a result, triggering additional enemies later in the stage that would force me to waste bombs and lives and alter my route.

I usually die at about 5:54. If I survive (as in this run), I suicide shortly before killing the boss to lower the difficulty for the next stage. I'm not comfortable entering 2-6 with two lives; the higher difficulty might result in my dying in a bad spot.

2-6 normally has a lot of bullet-spamming enemies. These won't appear if no items are floating around and you stay at low power.

I get a powerup just before the 2-6 boss. Ignoring that item carrier would have caused the game to generate an enemy formation and potential return bullets at the very start of the boss fight. Powering down right away reduces the boss' total health, making it possible to end the first phase before anything threatening happens.

  • amazing stuff there. it's incredible how a psikyo loop done right barely hints at how incredibly brutal they are or at how quickly everything can go to hell if the player isn't in absolute control - even if it still looks really goddamn hard.

  • @eugenebarrett Thanks a lot. While practicing, I was struck by the fact that many parts that completely blow you away the first several attempts have fairly economical solutions. Maybe I'm weird, but I think older Psikyo is kind of like Irem in this respect.

good shit here. been playing this every so often, using Katana mostly. really like her charged shot.

  • Insane piece of skills. The game looks way harder than when i use to 2nd loop it, but was years ago of course. But yeah i use pretty much the same strategy except i shoot down more enemies.
