Unfortunately, "things" happen in Hollywood. Warner Bros. supposedly passed over Angela Lansbury to reprise her Broadway role because she was not a known, bankable name. Lansbury had been around the MGM lot since Gaslight & The Harvey Girls. Lucy, who also backed some of the production costs was chosen, instead. The entire world knew Lucy. Even Roz Russell was getting a little long in the tooth when she filmed Auntie Mame. TV's Lucy, never a songstress, was somewhat past her prime for the part.
The Broadway stage is more forgiving than the camera lens. As luck would have it, Lucy breaks her leg at the start of production. Lucille Ball and Warners BEGGED Lansbury to take the part. Angela Lansbury had been so insensed and slighted at being rebuked the first time around that she simple refused and said she was unable to do the part. How sad for us all. I am a huge "Lucy" fan, but once she became Lucy Ricardo, she was never Lucille Ball again. She was superb in her films prior to "LUCY".
@WWEQAF Yep! I suspected this was the late 80's, as Bea looks exactly like she does during the first couple seasons of Golden Girls. It's from the 1987 Tony Awards.
@Fiftiesflashback , They should have given Diana Ross a call.
Money talks. Lucille certainly had plenty of that. However I think the project would have been much more successful with Angela.

Well never forgive Lucy for destroying the movie version. THIS is how it should have been.

Two class acts! I guess we'd better enjoy the few that we have left, because they'll never be replaced.
