Some tricks for fast long distance--
1) No alcohol
2) Carb/veggie/protein diet
3) Run four or five times / week
4) Train at a 6 mile pace on a treadmill for 1/4 mile stints over several miles, running at a comfortable pace on the alternate 1/4 mile segments.
5) On alternate days, run at alternating speed on a grade.
6) Keep strides fast and short, and try to avoid leaping or bouncing up and down as you run.
7) Continuously hyperaerate
8) Pace yourself with a stopwatch

Don't try to brag about how you think your probably made up mile time is impressive. I'm 6 years old and run a mile in 73 seconds.

Most people college cross country teams can do 5 miles in less than 30 minutes... Do that.

My fastest is 5:48 but I'm only 4 foot 9 and 84 lbs.....I'm in 7th grade.

@theburg520 its called a trundle wheel as far as i remember

@LMaster1 : yes. I was talking about randomly grabbing 100 people off the street and taking them to a track. some may be olympians. most will be overweight couch potatoes. my point. I've done non-running cardio training for over a year, 3 times per week and have gone from a 10 minute mile to 7 minute mile. i can see how shaving time off gets harder the lower you go. hopefully i'll get to 6 minutes but its not a critical goal for me. just one that would be cool to meet.

@cobrien1977 Yea, I agree as long as we are using could as in right this moment if you grabbed and hauled em to a track. Could as in have the potential/can with training and weight loss then I'd have to say most. Probably 90% or more.

@LMaster1 : great, then we agree. my previous posts were arguing with some dude who said most people could run a 6 minute mile. i said hell no and said that 2-3 out of 100 could.
what was that thing the person used to measure the track at the beginning?

The wheel was used to measure the extra 9.344 meters since the track is 400 meters (as most are now) and a mile is actually 1609.344 meters.

It is called a wheel or measuring wheel. You can get them in many increments (feet, meters....)
