All spins have to be played before the game ends. When players are passed spins, they're forced to play them. In this clip, each player is avoiding having to spin for fear of hitting a Whammy and losing all their money, so they just kept passing back and forth, but they keep hitting squares that give them an extra spin. It won't go away!

(in fact, I don't think he envisioned the possibility that someone would pass him spins he would be forced to take)

I think the "I couldn't pass it to Michael" comment Ed made was more so the fact that Ed was so gob-smacked with what had transpired that he didn't want to see him go on a tear and walk away with the network. He kindly stopped at $100K+, he could've easily won millions.
