WPAG Anti-Academy Conference Part 1

On Thursday 23 October 2008, the Wembley Park Action Group met to expose the controversy behind the privatisation of the UK state schooling system, also known as Academy schools.

A wide range of speakers from the right to left of the political circle discussed the history of state education, privatisation and those taking over the schools and the rushed and non-democratic process in which school "Academisation" is being forced through, both locally and nationally.

Part One:

NUT President Bill Greenshields, NUT & ATL Brent Secretary Hank Roberts, Green Party Martin Francis and Conservative Councillor Bob Blackman expose the non-democratic local council processes to impose Academy schools, the national opinion now turning against academies, a brief history of Academy sponsors and how the American inspiration of academy schools segregates pupils by social class and economic status.

Local residents talk about the biased and misleading council-backed literature designed to sway them towards Academy schools.

Wembley Academy Head Teacher Jacqueline Steele is caught in a bold face lie, denying the children would be put at risk by being educated on a construction site.
