@bedshow You have a much greater chance of being attacked by a shark (especially the pretty white ones with Big teeth) while on the surface of the water. From there, you look kinda like a skinny seal and thus probably an easy meal. Being underwater really makes the shark realize you are not a food source.
Shallow water blackout is a much larger cause of death, as is getting stuck under something drowning.

human being is no longer on the top of the food chain in this situation. but i do not worry about the shark too much. there are many other possible of death related to abalone diving. shark attack may only count 1% of the death toll.
