Adapting Plans for a Spudgun from the book Backyard Ballistics by William Gurstelle I made a Tennis Ball Cannon.
One of these days I need to get it out into wide open spaces to see how far I can shoot.

I temporarily mounted it on the luggage rack of my Ural Gear-Up... it just seemed appropriate.

The barrel is 36" of 2-1/2" PVC conduit, the chamber is 20" of 4" SCH40 PVC. The ingintion power supply is a 120KV self defense stun gun. The fuel is Berryman B-12 Carburetor cleaner.

The firing sequnce is:
1. (not shown) with both ends open, blow compressed air through tube to evacuate combustion products from prior shot.
2. Insert tennis ball.
3. Spray 1.5 to 2 sec. of fuel.
4. Blow a couple of blasts of compressed air into combustion chamber.
5. Screw in breech plug.
6. Push fire button.

  • do you think you could make a compressed air version with car opperated tyre pump to provide the pressure

  • @Drofeddamite

It would probably take quite a bit of air (large storage tank & quite a bit of time to

re-pressurize between shots). It would be quieter, and probably not draw ire

from neighbors & law enforcement... but the kaboom is part of the fun for me.

You can make an automated one which uses propane so that all you do is

put in the tennis bal, push a "charge" button and then push an "ignite" button.

The air fuel mix with propane can be tricky though.

  • Build one of these and become the first kid on your block to be the last kid on your block.

  • @KevinByrne2

It's only a tennis ball - the velocity is about the same as a tennis ball hit

hard by a tennis racket (think how far a pro player could hit a tennis ball)

It MIGHT leave a bruise, but it's not like being hit by a fastball in baseball.

  • it will fly farther if you compress the gas... ( ie. push the ball in after you gas it up.)
