This reportage is about the work done at the Villa S.Giovanni maritime station.
The maritime station is where trains going to or coming from Sicily are boarded into big boat; Villa S.Giovanni is the closest point between the main land and Sicily.
Each boat has 4 rail tracks of about 130 meters long; each passenger car is about 25 meters long and these trains have often 9 passenger cars that are split into two rows.
There are different trains in this video: at first the passenger Eurostar has driven by an ETR460.
Then a maneuver train, the D245, going back to the central station.
Finally there is the D145, a maneuver train for heavy duty works.
The D145 is an electrical train (traction is electrical) with a diesel engine to generate its own electricity.
The typical configuration is the engine with couple of cars: a freight car followed by a passenger one.
The passenger car is used by the crew waiting before loading/unloading passenger trains on the boat; these cars are used as spacer between the train engine and the boats smoke alarm, preventing the engine to get too close to the boat entrance.
All D145 in that configuration are used for that work; this video has been taken from as single D145 which was used for other maneuvers moving wine tanks and container freight.
This video has been shot in AVCHD with a Sony HDR-SR10E without a tripod, then edited in Final Cut Pro.
