The Mongolian students caught a gerbil inside the kitchen tent, and put it inside a bucket to keep as a pet; the gerbil was dubbed Mr. Jingles. Bill and Amra intervened, as all wildlife at Baga Gazaryn Chuluu is protected, and charged me with returning the gerbil to the wild, a safe distance from camp.

  • I don't think it's quite responsible to release him back into the wild :/ It depends how long has he been kept away from his pack. I breed gerbils for 4 years and I know that they tend to forget one's herd-allegiance after as little as 2 days. So if he had been away for more than 2 days, sadly-it MAY BE possible that he was killed by his own family upon his return :( Unfortunately, these animals can be quite cruel toward each other... Perhaps it would've been better if you kept him as a pet...

  • @MegaThrowaway: as I noted in earlier responses to similar comments, he was captive for less than an hour. Cheers!

  • Nice video of a wild gerbil. The gerbil should have been fine after a separation of only 30 minutes. If it had been away for more than 24 hours its clan might not have accepted it back.

Maybe nobody cares, but, by the way, did you notice for sure whether it was a male? With just a top view I'm not entirely certain, but it looked sort of like a Miss Jingles. (I've had a lot of gerbils.:) )

  • I wouldn't be surprised if the gerbil really was a "Miss." Once the students got the idea of naming it after the mouse in The Green Mile, the "Mr." part sort of stuck.

  • Aaaw. You should trained him to kill on command

  • hmmm...he would have come in handy at U.S. Customs, when they forced me to go through the anthrax check station. Then again, at least I didn't have to go through the Ninja Death Gerbil check station...

  • Gerbils are not the best at waking up. Normally they look like they need a cup of coffee to get going.

  • That's so cool to see a gerbil in their homeland.

  • @smexisezy1 did you know that metal acts as a heat sink? so it wouldn't have been hot. after all, the gerbil was lying in the shade.

  • @smexisezy1 he was not upset. he wasn't even panicking. please.
