I have an ibm thinkpad R50. My lcd backlight is having problems too. What your problem looks like the wires are shorting out from opening it and close it. (Its common for old computers to have that problem.) if you can get inside it you can problaby fix it yourself. You can see if the wires are aligned perfectly. If its something els just install a new backlight (The problem's not with the LCD) you can find one for the same cost as an HDMI cable. Trust me, it cost less for you to do it yourself.

@pilkjaer Having the same problem as we speak :/ damn

@dltircuit Well, i had my PC on warranty, so it was free of charge. but if your warranty is over - just order inventor from EBAY and replace it yourself. instructions on how to disassemble your thinkpad can be found on thinkpads support page

@pilkjaer feel sorry for you. it's really annoying. My IBM was total crap. I think it was like 7 times on service during 3 years. Other have no problems at all. So it's probably just luck... Anyway, good luck to you with your problem!

@amy15284 if u still have warranty - just go to HP-center. Otherwise cheapest will probably be to buy inventor from E-bay or similar and change it yourself. You probably can find on HP's page or somewhere on the web how to change it. At least IBM has technical documentation online, so you can see what you need to remove and in which order. But this all at your own risk of course.
You can buy inventor and just leave it to some electronic-workshop to get changed.
