@AtTaCkOfThErEtArDs17 They are lit from behind. It's a thin enough material to let the light through and since the light source is high, a shadow is cast at the bottom. The term hollow is not really a good description. They are concave.

The faces are actually not flat but they are caved in molds that when you move, the outer flat surfaces move in front or away from the mold of the face, causing the illusion that it follows you.
