On Veterans Day (11/11/08) around 9:00am while sitting at my desk at work I received an email from Murray County Animal Shelter begging for help. They had an 11 month old Miniature Pinscher with both front legs severely broken.. If not rescued, this little guy would face being put to sleep. When I saw the pictures of him on my email my heart just melted..Needless to say, I took off work the rest of the day and headed down to Murray County Shelter to rescue and save this little guys life.
About 1:30 pm I arrived at Murray County Animal Shelter. As soon as I saw him my heart just cried for him and thats when I decided to name him Veteran. After all, he was lying there with two broken legs like a wounded solider and it was Veterans Day that I came to his rescue.
My favorite part about meeting Veteran was that his tail was wagging so fast, and he had this big grin on his face. No matter how bad his day got, he never lost hope.
So on the car ride back to Chattanooga , TN , we realized every bump and stop was painful for Veteran. Veteran started panting heavily all the sudden.....he was letting me know he needed to use the bathroom (he is very clever) so we stopped at the nearest exit. Bless his heart; he wanted to walk on his back legs to do it on "his own". He was breaking my heart, I was so afraid he would lose balance and fall on his broken limbs. Not once did he ever stop wagging his tail.
We finally made it to the Vet at 3:00 pm. Doc could not get over how happy Veteran was. Veteran went back for X-Rays and I sat on the edge of my seat waiting for results. Finally, Doc came back with the news: Veteran needs two metal rods in his front legs. The break on the left foot is all the way broke at an "angle" which makes for faster healing. However, the right paw is a straight break all the way across, which is a little slower in healing. The good news is that these breaks are fresh and calcium has not had time to set in (Thank Goodness!!).
The Doc's prognosis: Veteran will recover fully in 6-8 weeks. He also said that the attitude of this dog is remarkable and his appetite is great, which is a step in the right direction for Veteran.
I am thankful I got to meet "Veteran"; he is a true fighter. No matter how bad his day was, he smiled the whole way. He thanked me over and over with his wet kisses. He truly appreciates his life. I admire this little guy.
True Heart Min Pin Rescues goal with Veteran is to get him back walking, and enroll him as a Therapy dog to visit recovering soldiers and others. Hopefully Veteran can give soldiers and others the hope to hang in there and keep there head high, especially to the soldiers that have lost limbs and undergone major surgery.
So last but not least, the reason I feel the need to share this story with the public is for many reasons. First, this is just one story out of so many, where a homeless dog will have a happy ending. Second, I want to hopefully educate the public in dog adoptions, saving a homeless pet or even becoming a foster home for homeless dogs until they get adopted. Third, spaying and neutering your animals has a huge chain reaction in so many different ways. Most of all, the population at the shelter would decrease significantly. Therefore, fewer dogs would have to be euthanized. Fourth, the response on Veterans story has been amazing!! People from all around the United States are responding and constantly wanting updates on Veteran. I feel Veteran has the chance to not only educate the public but make a difference in so many lives.
Veteran is doing great. The Vet Tech that cared for him ended up adopting him. They are a match made in heaven. Thanks for all the comments.
