On the package, and in advertisements at the time, this legend appeared: "Gardol is Colgate's trade-mark for Sodium N-Laroyl Sarcosinate". Today, a variation of that formula {sodium laruyl sulfate} is used in every tube, including "fluoride"; the original "Gardol" formula was retired years ago, 'stickinup'.

Yeah, and I like that the guy just stands around menacingly in the background for a few seconds after he throws it.

You know, it still looks like the football hits him in the face and he's just not phased by it... which is hilarious, in my opinion.

It was Rosser Reeves, an executive with Ted Bates & Company {Colgate's ad agency}, who came up with the idea of the "invisible shield" campaign, which became Colgate's trademark for years. This commercial may be 20 seconds short, but you get the idea...this was usually shown on Colgate's sponsored series, like "THE MILLIONAIRE" and "THE THIN MAN".
