I want to get at the MAIN point. All currencies (gold, silver, seashells, salt, and green paper) are backed by the confidence that other people use them in transactions of wealth. Gold is also backed by the confidence that other people will accept it. Gold is rare, but that doesn't make it valuable except for the fact that people will PROBABLY use it in transactions of wealth. The element HELIUM is rare, and limited in supply, but we don't use it transact wealth.

@TaffyAlpha Hmm....so where is this confidence in the American dollar? Why are most countries switching their oil reserve to the Euro? Why is the dollar slipping like a rock? You think CONFIDENCE gives the dollar value? Gold no longer backs the US dollar, hasn't since 1933 when your gold was scooped up to pay off the international bankers. Now the dollar IS worthless. Nothing backs it. Not even manufacturing or labor can back the dollar now, because that was outsourced. It's worth nothing.
