Once again I returned to Puzzle Lake, this time with Rick Marchand and his cousin Scott for some winter camping bushcraft style. We ran the gambit on temperatures starting off with foggy, freezing rain and +1oC followed by a deep freeze two days later reaching a low of -28oC as read on our thermometer. Lots of hiking, cutting wood, more cutting wood and sleep. It was a great trip with plenty to learn!

  • Are the anoraks of the other 2 campers mass produced or hand made. I've been looking for something similar.

  • @kidenu They are handmade (Scott made them from Italian military wool blankets). During the same trip I was wearing a Swanndri bushshirt layered over top a woolrich wool shirtjac and that worked great. Another place to consider is Empire Canvas works who makes them and sells them on-line.

  • Those Canadian Forces Arctic Mukluks must have been great when it was -28C. Any particular reason that you guys choose to use backpacks over a pulk/sled? There seemed to be enough snow to make it work.

  • @bwillan it was mainly a space issue. We had three people and elected to go in one vehicle (a small SUV). There was enough room for packs but not sleds. The snowbase was pretty minimal prior to the trip, but the rain that turned into snow subsequently beefed it up. A sled would have been less useful on the first day but would have been great on the return trip home. Next time I visit I will probably go with a sled.
