I had one of the most memorable musical years and the start of a great adventure here in Los Angeles right at M.I. and although it has been some 30 years I am still in awe. I got to meet people I never thought I would meet (mostly students that all brought something to my table) and do things I had only dreamed of after and as a result of my stay on Hollywood Blvd above the Wax Museum.
This video represents the talk we were given when we walked in the door, an orientation not by some secretary or even one of the many "stars" that came through Musicians Institute but instead by the founders Pat Hicks and Howard Roberts the guys that actually made it happen. I met Tommy Tedesco and truly warm and giving individual. The list goes on and on... I got a job sidelining for Ray Brown on a Linda Ronstadt video for Cinemax only to have Ray come up in the back of the studio and watch me do the job. What a THRILL from one of my all time favorite bass players.
My connection to them was so profound, I wore a shirt given to me by HR on my graduation day. I worked for the school taking Tony Marinara's (?) place as the guy who signed students after hours to use the practice rooms there, I got my first job at NAMM as a result of Becky Hicks suggesting that I go down to (such and such) room, they were auditioning bass players to work as product demonstrators (I still have gone to/worked every NAMM show since 1982).
I met my best friend and master luthier Michal Tobias as a result of the association with M.I.
Yeah baby, fond memories.
