Golden Earring Live 1977 To the Hilt

Live is een dubbel live album van Golden Earring en behoort volgens de kenners tot de hoogtepunten uit hun carrière. Bekend om hun live-reputatie onderscheidt deze live-elpee met zeer lang uitgesponnen nummers zich bovendien van alle andere concert-registraties in het oeuvre. Samen met Contraband (1976) en Grab It For a Second (1978) is Live een van de drie albums waaraan Eelco Gelling als Earring-lid deelnam. Met zijn maniakale soli op Mad Love's Comin', Con Man en Radar Love verleent Gelling een toegevoegde waarde aan het Earring-geluid. In dat geluid ligt de nadruk op de solide en swingende ritmesectie, die ten volle tot uiting komt in onder meer Mad Love's Comin' en Radar Love. Barry Hay haalt uit op Candy's Going Bad en Vanilla Queen. "Live" markeert een scharnier in de periode na het succes van Radar Love. Tot en met dit in de Rainbow Theatre in Londen opgenomen live-plaat tracht de Earring haar internationale positie te handhaven. Na "Live" dreigt alles wat de Haagse band in jaren heeft opgebouwd uit haar handen te glippen. De verkoopcijfers kelderen en het voortbestaan van de band staat ter discussie.

I saw GR at the Agora in Columbus Ohio when Moontan had just come out. Awesome, remarkable live band. Thank God I was alive in the day to see all these Great 60s and 70s bands. When rock music ruled the earth.

imho one of the greatest transformations of a mediocre studio-recording into a totally awesome live song, with yet again great guitarplaying by Eelco Gelling. coming into it with subtle piecies here and there and building it into a raging solo at the end. Incredible!!!
