Cutting out hair from a photo can be quite tricky - or it used to be... In this tutorial I will show you a few tricks on how to isolate and extract hair from a background so that you can then composite the image on to a new background using Photoshop CS5.

Earlier versions of Photoshop will not work with this tutorial.

  • Dear author, it is incredibly curly hair, my sister succumbed to these machinations :) Now you can put it to some sort of picture perfect backdrop. Thank you again

  • thanks a lot!!

  • THANKS ALOT , YOU ARE THE BEST MAN ! :D

  • thank u!

  • I've spent the past 2 hours of my life trying to watch different tutorials on how to do this. I finally came to yours and I thought it was the secret to success. I kept having this problem where the hair turns white and I need to fix it. No one else suggested painting it back in with the brush and I did it and all it did was paint back in the back ground. I must be an idiot but I still can't get it to work. My strands are not showing up. Two hours...gone. It's not like this is difficult :(

  • This wroks just with easy photos :|

If you have things in the background you cannot do a shit :|

  • Why when I "Refine Edge" my background is white not black like yours?

  • Great video - superb results. Many thanks :)
