It dose make sense for the occasonal animal to go a little hay-wire now and again to explore new territories. If none did, they'd never find new rescources, the species would be fixed to one location and far less likely to spread and endure.

Penguin expert (one of the world's best) explained this in a mail to me)
'All animals get disorientated from time to time. However, despite what the narrator said, there is no reason why the penguin should keep on walking in the wrong direction. It may easily have turned round and come back 5 miles down the road. It's not as if the interior of Antarctica is littered with penguin corpses. Many birds explore new sites to nest for next year. I'd call it media hype."

i feel so sad for the penguin T__T ...
To answer the poster of the video: No, Herzog is not consumed with angst, and he doesn't think life is meaningless. Every film he makes indicates that he thinks life is far more strange and wonderful than the categorical thinking in our mass culture will allow us to see. Cf. the Russian formalist notion of ostranenie (roughly translated as "estrangement" or "defamiliarization"). Nobody in film does that better than Herzog.
