He was the right age, the point of the story being that all of the mercenaries were suppose to be too old for the mission, or to quote Jack Watsons actual line int he film - 'Not too old?' - Duh, talk about thick and missing the plot.

@RichardElden Juan Macready, your a talentless cock - and Harris didn't die of cancer you prick. Burton and Harris were two of the most talented actors who ever lived

@t19dal It totally agree. What more perfect than a RSM that has age and experience and more guts than any young RSM. Good comment mate!

Bollocks to both comments. They were all stars. Jack watson was a perfect RSM. If you think this was an in adequate casting then you are sorely wrong. Best mersonary film EVER made.

@RichardElden You don't sound like a very happy person.

@Puzzoozoo - no not middle age but lack of good health might

@thebigboo68 RicharElden is 19 years old and is probably a wannabe "Wolfie" Smith.

@RichardElden Peter Hain is just another socialist nob head.

@aewd1980 Middle age doesn't pose a barrier when it come to military operations, especially when they have done it all before.
@puzokutya The point is that Roger Moore was the only star when this film was made in 1977. Burton's career was dead and Harris never made it in Hollywood because Camelot and The Molly Maguires both flopped.

@vegetalian They were going to cast Stephen Boyd, who was the right age, as the RSM, but he died a few weeks before filming began.
