I and quite a few others walked from Cambridge to the Stones...to scatter the ashes of a local Cambridge lad who passed away far far too early. It was quite the adventure from mad farmers, confused villagers and even more confused police. Then the entire riot thing. All I know was I was tripping my nuts off when all hell broke loose. Did like the releasing of the cows though that was fun. As was the shouting of 'What a waste of money' when the police helicopter arrived :)

@FredaPeople I was there must have been pretty close to you, saw the black flag raised on the Hele stone.
Nearly everybody was peaceful until the pigs went for it.
The newspapers all showed footage of a petrol bomb being thrown, this was in fact a photograph of hay or straw being thrown at the pigs. But lit up by flashlight and in black and white they got away with their lies and this justified the violence of the pigs.
Peace ;-)

So weird to see old fashioned news. The disdain towards "hippies" is barely concealed and that police chief! He wouldn't last 5 minutes these days!!

I remember being made to walk the collanade : about 1.5 feet of space between 2 lines of coppers and no idea where it was going except the ambulances lined up at the end. They looked you in the eye, they did this kind of facial thing. I learned an awful lot about peole all of a sudden.

@FredaPeople I didn't know that. We got back to Cholderton from the stones and went to sleep in a bender we'd built. The next day we got woken up by riot police ordering us to leave and I remember wondering where the hell everyone had gone and how so many people had left without us waking up. It was strange to see so few people left in the camp.

What happened to my comment? Dang it I was there !
8 mile march in the dark then the tabloid journalists deliberately start a stampede back at Cholderton just to get us on the run. Rest of the week in Glaston town centre.

Yeah, I was there too. About 20ft back from from Hele Stone and slightly to the east. I remember how the tabloid journalists deliberately started a panic the next morning at Cholderton. Running, screaming into the camp: "The Riot Squad are coming to evict you! Get out!" Just to get a stampede for the pictures... An 8 mile march in the night, then half an hour's sleep. A whole ton of us washed up in Glastonbury town centre for the rest of the week. Day trip to Minehead etc... Nice.
i remember we were parked up on the roundabout, a whole lot of people turned up, bit scruffy, smokin spliff but leary vibe, made themselves stand out like sore thumbs. we (horsedrawns) kept an eye on them as they appeared when the tv cameras left. i think we knew what was about to happen then. those fekers kicked it all off and i'm pissed the news said it was us. thatcher's thugs, lot of em about in the 80's but people forget...so im reminding y'all. thanx for postin this, brought it all back
