@BenHBX But has a terrible ballistic coefficient, can't penetrate soft body armor, has tremendous recoil, and is a rimmed pistol cartridge.... I think the military knows quite a bit more about caliber selection than you do...
@xDSqxRazoRx I know the standard service loads have almost identical ballistics, but the .30-06 has 20% more capacity, and I've seen quite a few hand loads with 150gr bullets pushing 3200ft/s, and in theory, out of a 24in barrel, the same velocity as the standard 20mmx102mm round out of a vulcan cannon should be possible(3450ft/s) should be possible, since powder cap/bullet weight/barrel length/diameter are the same
@sluginsaddlebuckshot I'm not sure which comment you're replying to, but the .30-06 fires the exact same projectiles as a .308

Would have been interesting to see 54R or 8mm Mauser in similar testing...

@BenHBX
7,62mm NATO and .30-06 are in the same energy class (3,5 to 4 kJ). The range and "power" are almost identical as 7,62 has slightly better ballistics.

the point was that the U.S. used to use the .30-06, which barely has any more kick than the.308, but is about 11/2 times more power and range
