The command does not "Tell the router" that it has 6 paths too the network, but rather specify the maximum number of paths there will ever be.
Real world topologies dont usually look as simple as this

If there are only 2 paths to get to the 2.x.x.x network from router A. Why would you put in the maximum-path 6 command? Why would you want the router to think it has 6 paths to it, since it only has 2?
