Scene from 'Elizabeth R' starring Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I.

I've posted a factual clip about Elizabeth's accession:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efKUUoRSTnc&feature=PlayList&p=05FE3B7...

On 6th November 1558 Mary acknowledged that her heir was Elizabeth and requested her to make sure her debts were paid and to maintain the Church. She also asked for her mother's body to be brought to Westminster and to buried beside her but this and the other requests were overlooked (probably as it would have stirred up old feelings about Henry's first divorce and Elizabeth, Anne Boleyn's daughter, did not want to dwell on her own illegitimacy when acceding to the throne.) Mary died on the 17th November and Elizabeth quickly received the news at Hatfield. As Mary went through the process of dying, the road to Hatfield was clogged with traffic as so many were desperate to pay their allegiances to the soon to be Queen.

According to tradition, Elizabeth was sitting under an oak tree when she received the news that she was Queen. As the drama depicts she is said to have immediately recited Psalm 118:23 however she spoke it in her wonderful Latin:

'A Domino factum est illud et est mirabile in oculis nostris.'

'This is the Lords doing; it is marvellous in our eyes'.

  • Thank God this woman was Englands Queen. Imagine if Mary Tudor had borne a child. Doesn't bear thinking about.

  • Whilst I agree with the insightful comments, this is not a movie. This is a T.V series commissioned in the early 1970s. By far the best ever written and performed. This was before the days when history and famous historical figures were saddeningly portrayed by modern television as semi-pornographic muse acts. It is wonderful to see that many of the viewers know their stuff. Keep posting these. They are wonderful!

  • This series was brilliant - one of the best portrayals of Elizabeth by the popular media ever. Later movies and television programs proved lackluster with respect to the standard of acting and historical accuracy set here.

That said, one quibble with the scene. Elizabeth I ascended the throne of England on the 17th November 1558. The producer took poetic license with the seasons. The trees are in full foliage - looks more like mid-summer than late fall.

  • @dizzy365 The only reason latins are the biggest minority is that at least half of you are illegal aliens sponging off this country. How do I know? The best example lives accross the street. Four complete families in one house. So many folks it is illegal. (I know cause I am a landlord ) So many cars they park on the street. Illegal also to park overnight but when you are a beaner and most of the cops are beaners this happens. Real estate taxes are skyrocketing with 14 kids but only one tax pd.

  • @madisonelectronic Hey, that may happen sooner than you think. If Obama was elected, and many people voted for him just because he's (half) African American, what on earth makes you think we can't have a Hispanic president, especially with Hispanics being the largest minority in the US? Think before you speak, rascist, ignorant pos.

  • @chocolatefountain95 Well if you learned that you get the throne after your sister who was a spiteful, Protestant-hating woman who hated you, I'd imagine you'd throw your hat away too. lol

  • @rog5762 Amen, we would have some fucking spic named Gomez in the White House.

  • Is Glenda Jackson Littlemisssunnydales favourite Elizabeth, I wonder.

  • Anne Boleyn had the last laugh,I guess.

  • There's one thing that nobody knows.God gave us Elizabeth to rule..and boy did she rule.Like a lion with a lion's heart.

What can i say if it wasn't for Elizabeth to succeed to the throne we would not be sitting here bloating. The WHOLE of history would've changed completely IF The Spanish Armada was won by the Spaniards.Thinking of England under the Catholics then would've been a total disaster for the future of the world.

So Elizabeth was and IS The MOST IMPORTANT MONARCH OFF ALL TIME.

  • @SophieGizzy Maybe later, but Elizabeth likely felt liberated from her sister's suspicion. There were times Elizabeth could have been condemned to the fate of her mother Anne Boleyn

  • Find out you're Queen - throw your hat away - classic
